Divine Choices: Moksha Patam

Moksha Patam is the original Indian board game representing the path to moksha—liberation from samsara, the cycle of reincarnation. Through British colonization, this game was stripped of its spiritual significance and rebranded as Chutes and Ladders, removing the crucial messaging behind the presence of snakes and ladders in the game. Snakes represent negative attributes such as greed, dishonesty and violence, while ladders represent positive attributes such as generosity, empathy and loyalty. Moksha Patam is a lesson in how we move through the world and how our positive or negative actions influence certain outcomes in life.
